Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Elliott Parker, PhD, Economics professor at the University of Nevada-Reno and Nevada's Second Gentleman.

His presentation, entitled The Covid-19 Recession and Prospects for Recovery, will address the current economic downturn in the context of future inflation, unemployment, bankruptcies, economic growth, savings rates, and poverty, as well as income and wealth inequality. He will also touch on the state budget currently being negotiated at the legislature and the newly enacted 1.9 trillion dollar American Rescue Plan.

Elliott Parker was an Air Force brat who earned a Bachelor's in Business Systems Analysis from the University of Texas–Arlington in 1983, then left Texas and never looked back. After adding a Masters and PhD from the University of Washington, he came to Nevada to become a professor of economics at the University of Nevada-Reno. He has published several dozen articles in academic journals, and is still working on increasing that number. He's also authored around six dozen op-ed's in a number of Nevada newspapers, but reports giving that up for Lent. Hopefully not for good — they make for great reading!

Prof. Parker is currently the economics department chair, and has also served as associate dean, university director of the Core Curriculum, chair of the faculty senate, and co-editor of the China Economic Review. He teaches international and comparative economics, and wrote a textbook a couple years ago on the comparative economics of growth and inequality. Before that, he coauthored a book on Nevada’s Great Recession with his wife Kate Marshall, Nevada’s current Lieutenant Governor. He was supposed to spend last Spring on sabbatical in Eastern Europe, but the killjoy pandemic cut that short. He's currently working remotely from home, and like the rest of us is desperately looking forward to experiencing real human interaction again. At least his dog — a two-year old Berger Picard named Penny — is happy.

Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, March 15th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to social distancing restrictions at in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for these Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
